Former 2010 Coach of the Year Earns Coach of the Month Honors in First Season with Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The NBA announced today that Washington Wizards head coach Scott Brooks was named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for games played in January. It marks the fourth time Brooks has earned the award and he is the fourth coach in franchise history to earn Coach of the Month honors.
Brooks guided the Wizards to league best-tying 12-4 record in the month of January, including going undefeated at home, and marking the highest win total in January in franchise history (tied with the 1972-73 Bullets at 12-2). The Wizards are currently 28-20 and riding a 15-game home winning streak.
Washington was a perfect 7-0 at home during the month and posted the most overall wins in the Eastern Conference.
The Wizards posted a 5-4 record on the road, winning their final three games away from Verizon Center, including two wins against division opponents and playoff teams.The five road victories tied Golden State and Houston for the second most road wins in the NBA for the month, and ranked second in the East. Washington posted back-to-back 10-win months for the first time since 2006-07 and was one of only three teams in the Eastern Conference to do so (Cleveland and Boston).
For the month, Washington held their opponents to a league-best .434 shooting while averaging 109.4 points per game which ranked seventh in the NBA and third in the East. Opponents tallied 102.6 points per contest which ranked first in the East and fourth in the league. The Wizards won three games during the month when trailing by 10+ points (1/8 at MIL, 1/10 vs. CHI and 1/14 vs. PHI). The team scored a season-high 123 points vs. Boston on 1/24 and achieved their third highest point total of the season vs. Portland on 1/16 scoring 120. The Wizards held the lead from the 9:50 mark in the first quarter at Charlotte on 1/23 until :51.2 in the third quarter at New Orleans on 1/29, marking the longest such streak by a team in the NBA this season. The Wizards’ lead spanned four games and a total of 169 minutes and 8.8 seconds.
Brooks currently holds a 366-227 (.617) regular season record as a head coach in the NBA. His .617 winning percentage is the third best in the NBA among active coaches who have been on the sidelines for a minimum of five seasons. His regular season winning percentage ranks 22
nd all-time in NBA history. He joins Wes Unseld (Jan. 1988), Doug Collins (Dec. 2001) and Eddie Jordan (Dec. 2006) as the franchise’s coach of the month honorees.
